Description:
Thirty-six allied Buddhist kingdoms dominate the financially and culturally valuable silk route north of the enormous Tang dynasty Chinese empire of the eighth century. They face threats from brigand bands, caravans, and Turkic nomad tribes. Lai Qimay, a Japanese scholar, might not go home until the emperor is happy with his efforts to bring refugees back from the desolate borderlands. Last but not least is capable imperial lieutenant Li, who was banned for not putting Turkic detainees to death. He currently resides with other warriors who are hired as caravan escorts. A gentleman agrees with Lai Qi and Li to delay their deadly combat until after a caravan carrying a young Buddhist monk and his enigmatic cargo has arrived safely.
